Monetize the Mic

Jess and Margy are the co owners of Interview Connections, the first and leading podcast booking agency. This is the podcast where you will learn all about podcast guesting and how to leverage podcast interviews to grow your brand awareness.

On today’s episode of Rock the Podcast, Jess interviews Daniel J. Lewis, creator of My Podcast Reviews and host of The Audacity to Podcast! Daniel and Jess discuss everything you’ve ever wanted to know about podcast ratings and reviews, and answer Rock the Podcast listener questions!

Daniel first explains the differences between ratings and reviews. Ratings are 1 to 5 stars, are anonymous, and may or may not have accompanying reviews. “Ratings” counts usually include reviews, too. Reviews are the written opinions and always include ratings on Apple Podcasts (but not required on Podchaser). iTunes showed this separate number, but Apple Podcasts doesn’t.

As of this recording, there are 1,406,628 valid podcasts! Of those podcasts:

  • 2.0% (28,762) have 20+ USA reviews
  • 0.9% (12,529) have 50+ USA reviews
  • 0.5% (6,488) have 100+ USA reviews

Jess and Daniel also talk about the differences between streams and downloads (spoiler: there’s barely any difference), and other metrics podcasters should be paying attention to. Instead of looking at how many people are listening to your podcast, Daniel recommends podcasters should look at how listeners are listening to your podcast. Are they listening to just one episode? Are they listening to the entire episode, or do they drop off in the middle? These questions can provide immense value to podcasters looking to grow and engage their audience.

Daniel also discusses how to spot artificial podcast ratings and reviews, why ratings and reviews have no effect on podcast rankings, and why subscriptions are the most valuable currency in podcasting.

You can connect with Daniel at My Podcast Reviews: His service helps podcasters know, engage, and grow their audiences through the power of podcast reviews. My Podcast Reviews collects reviews from all 175 Apple Podcast stores, plus additional platforms. His service shows podcasters their reviews, your ratings, helps them understand podcast engagement, and even offers a service to make leaving a review for podcasts even easier for listeners.

On today’s episode of Rock the Podcast, Jess and Margy discuss the importance of a pre-call with a podcast host before your interview. As entrepreneurs, many of our clients feel too busy for a pre-call, but that call is one of the best ways to increase your ROI on your podcast guesting strategy.

Pre-calls are incredibly valuable. With pre-calls, the interview will be better as you build rapport, with the host and talk through things that their listeners will be interested in. You’ll have a better idea of the demographic and psychographic of their audience and you can tailor your stories and your messaging to better connect to the listeners.

The biggest ROI clients see from interviews is because of networking with the podcast host. That relationship is so valuable and can turn into high-end speaking opportunities, or host referring clients to you, or even the host themselves becoming a client. A pre-call will unquestionably make your interview better because the host will have a better understanding of you and your story.

On today’s episode of Rock the Podcast, Jess and Margy talk about having breakdowns and breakthroughs in your business. Sometimes as business owners, when we feel like things are failures and when we feel like things are going wrong, we need to realize that those “failures” or breakdowns were actually a path to something better: a breakthrough.

It’s really helpful to reframe breakdowns and failures as not something that is negative but something that comes just before a breakthrough. Those failures are not pushing you off the path to success, they are the path to success. Covid was a huge setback for many businesses, including us here at Interview Connections. However, we started implementing things in our business during covid that have made us stronger. We asked ourselves, during this time, how can we create more community and more value?

What have the last 6 months looked like for you? What setbacks have you had? What breakdowns did you experience? And what breakthroughs and lightbulb moments have you had because of those setbacks?

Don’t forget to register for our Podcast Guesting Masterclass, which kicks off today! This Masterclass will teach you how to get started as a podcast guest, monetize your podcast interviews, and everything you need to know to get booked and grow your business with this strategy!

On today’s episode of Rock the Podcast, Jess and Margy discuss the mirror concept in business. When it comes to your team, your employee’s performance is always a mirror of your leadership. If your employees are not meeting goals and expectations, ask yourself, “How does this reflect my leadership?” By asking yourself that question, that is how you will grow as a leader.

The mirror concept expands further to the results you see in your business. The types of leads you are attracting mirror the systems, marketing, and messaging that you have in place, so it’s incredibly important to look at what content you’re putting out. If you’re not getting the results you want, it’s because you don’t have the correct systems, marketing, and messaging in place. Are the actions you’re taking mirroring that result that you want to see in your business?
